In early 2017, a controversial video clip posted by Pepsi featuring supermodel Kendall Jenner conducting protests for freedom brought about huge social instability. Some were furious about how a can of coke can resolve any social conflict. Apart from detrimentally affecting individuals and society, some point out that advertisements are brainwashers. Mcdonald’s image image ads often display delicious-looking junk food, luring customers to unhealthy diet. It seems that ads have done more harm than good.

Advertisements manipulate customers’ minds by convincing them into purchasing products and services of lower value to them. Advertisers often amplify the benefits of a product and completely omit its weaknesses. Featured products, as a result, seems flawless. Apple are keen to showcase how powerful functions and features incorporated in their products are. As a result, customers who may not even consider buying before are desperate to have one. Furthurmore, consumers’ loyalty created by Apple is the key to constantly attract customers, some of whom may not even need one.
The impact ads have on individuals and society are multiple and some of which are undesirable. Some ads are so persuasive at promoting their products such that people are constantly driven to it. Overconsumption of some of these products, however, can lead to health issue. Asahi constantly releases great ads featuring their old and new beers to increase customer base. However, many become addicted to asahi beers and overdose on these liquors causes liver failure, brain damage and some other unpleasant hangover effects. Also, some ads such as promotions of gambling makes millions of people lose their fortune. Hence, it seems that ads certainly have crippled some areas of people’s lives.
Misleading or not, advertisements are undeniably excellent source of information as allow customers to compare products in terms of appearance, price, etc. Though their features can be over-exaggerated, most customers with great judgement and experience can identify the flaws and hence make better decisions.
