What Makes Don't Starve Such a Great Game?

The word Excellence is barely sufficient to describe my respect towards Don't Starve. Minecraft started off strong, introducing a brand new survival gaming concept. Don't starve took the gist and brought it to a whole new level. Steam grants it a stunning 10/10 score, which is the highest compliment a video game can possibly receive. As a regular gamer, I was skeptical but excited when started my Don't starve journey. But not much time was taken before I fell in love to practically everything about it and I don't believe anyone can resist the temptation. Here's why.

Even experienced gamers won't deny the very fact that Don't Starve is one of those games that knows it characters. Characters with interesting personalities are often welcomed players, especially those that tell stories and interact with players. Don't Starve concocts a bunch of well-defined characters with quirks and talents that constantly keep players amazed. Wickerbottom, the librarian, complicates things with jargon and big words. Wendy, the bereaved, constantly whines about her miserable life. Though they are quirky in their own ways, they never fail to keep players entertained.

A game can be boring on its own if stories become predictable, and that is the why Don't Starve does their best to keep you from surviving. While you become comfortable when you think you have prepared warm clothes and enough food to survive through winter time, your base is destroyed by penguins that are not even seen on the map. While you pick up a magic-looking rod lying randomly in the middle of desert, the next thing you know, you are chewed by wolves to death. There are also time, however, when game shows you some mercy. Fireflies popped up, preventing you from the death of darkness. Wolves that meant to chase you are somehow distracted by bees. The circle of relief and thrill keeps you awake at night, figuring out how to survive the very next day.

A mediocre game makes players follow, a great game makes players think. There is not one second I am not thinking about devising a plan to survive the upcoming event. How to keep my base safe from giants? How to get marble out of the hand of bishop? What is the most efficient way to harvest crops. Playing Don't Starve is practically a brainstorming session. And finally, what pleases players the most is nothing but the success attained from their brilliant game strategies.
While Don't Starve is not simply about filling up your stomach, its excellence is insufficient to be described by words. Its magnificence can only be experienced by delving into the gameplay and enjoying every moment of life and death.
