University is generally considered an intermediate stage between school and work. University students are granted the opportunity to pursue their interests in various subjects by enrolling in particular courses and apply what they learn in their future careers. The scope of subjects students pursue vary from one to another depending on their preferences. While most dive deeply into one particular course and developed a thorough understanding of every aspect of it, quite a handful today choose to study a wide range of topics.

Competition in the workplace can be daunting for students and only the most competent ones in particular subjects can survive. It is hence essential for students to hone their skills and develop concrete understanding of these subjects by dedicating their time and effort in learning every detail of them. For example, most only select the most skillful Java programmers to be one their teams because their projects require highly efficient codes that can run multiple environment. Students who are looking for career opportunities in google have to specialize in writing Java scripts. Hence, being proficient at one single subject give students the advantage of finding their desired jobs.
In some situation, however, student must be skillful at various subjects in order to compete against each other in job hunting. More companies today, especially the startups, look particularly for employees who can handle task of all kinds. They aim to get as many as possible jobs done by hiring the least number of workers. Restaurant managers often look for people who can not only wait tables but also bookkeeping and general administrations. Also, students who have wide range of interests tend to have more careers options and have higher possibility of getting employed.
However, the is only way to examine students' learning outcome is to put their skills to the test in actual workplace. As students should be encouraged to embrace a wide range of subject in University, the rule of thumb is that no matter how many subjects they study, they should take every single one of them seriously.
