Universities are generally considered a transition between schools and work. As universities offer useful academic resource to students which can equip them with necessary skills and knowledge to work in certain positions after graduation, full-time students should dedicate majority of their time to their coursework. In some cases, however, academically inclined students ended up struggling in their workplaces as they generally lack certain skills such as people skills and working experience. Though these skills are not taught in papers, they can be learnt from various activities conducted in University. Hence, in order to be more competent overall, students should consider engaging in some University activities while spending significant time and effort on academic studies.

Student should consider focusing on studying as academic lessons they learn in University are the prerequisite for them to be capable at workplace. Though students are generally distinguished according to their preference in various courses, skills they learn from teachers and textbooks can be somehow applied in different working environment. Graphic design students learn about the aesthetics of images and use of digital tools which are applicable for website and poster design. Business management students, on the other hand, learn about the principle of marketing and trades which can be useful for them to handle administration of a company. Furthermore, the degrees students receive upon graduation are highly appreciated by employers. Hence, students should be motivated to be more diligent in their studies.

Workplaces, however, could be daunting for new graduates who lack the experience of working. Students therefore should consider search for working opportunities to gain some degree of experience while in University before graduation. Since students without a degree usually face the challenge of finding a job, Universities provides students plenty opportunities to work on campus or work in certain contracted firms as interns. For instance, the University of Melbourne kindly open school curriculum consulting positions for University students to gain some form of working experience. With various working experiences, students have some idea how to deal with working pressure and handling relationship with colleagues. They can therefore easily fit into a working environment. Universities also create opportunities for students to interact and make connections by inviting students to join school clubs and societies, where they can learn about teamwork and make lifetime good friends.

Students can learn the most useful lessons in University if and only if they understand how to explore and make full use of resources provided. Shelby Foote once said that a university is just a group of buildings gathered around a library. I would rather argue that it is a group of libraries surrounded by opportunities.
